A PAN-EUROPEAN ASSESSMENT OF CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON HYDROLOGY WITHIN A NOVEL WATER ACCOUNTING PLUS (WA+) FRAMEWORK

Description

Data and models developed for different European basins are used to assess climate change impacts on water resources by fitting the outputs into a single water accounting framework. Three time horizons have been analysed for all basins for different climate scenarios: baseline, near future (2030-2050) and far future (2080-2100). The results show that, for example, in the Mediterranean basins, both green water (from direct rainfall) and blue water (streams and reservoirs) will decrease by 5 to 10% in the near future.

(Potential) Categories of users

Water authorities, water resource managers, local authorities

(Potential) applications to decision making in the water sector:

The WA+ framework can advise large-scale strategic adaptation decisions in the water sector.

Added value of this modelling approach/model/results

Better communication of climate change impacts at the European level, as WA+ communicates with a single set of indicators.

What decision can be improved with this modelling approach:

WA+ can be applied to the assessment of regional vulnerability to droughts and water scarcity, particularly in agricultural sector.
