PROBABILISTIC FORECASTS FOR WATER NAVIGATION FOR THE RHINE
Description
We launched a pre-operational probabilistic forecasting system to support decision-making in the Rhine navigation sector. Forecasts extend from the short-range to a monthly time scale and are actively used by various stakeholders in the area. We also provide stakeholders with daily pre-operational probabilistic 10-day forecasts for locations along the river Rhine that are crucial for navigation.
(Potential) Categories of users
Skippers, logistic managers, transport operators, harbour and waterway managers, transmission grid operators, economists
(Potential) applications to decision making in the water sector:
Probabilistic forecasts to support operations and long-term planning of inland waterway transport (IWT), particularly during low flow events

Added value of this modelling approach/model/results
Probabilistic forecasts for future water levels delivering more relevant information for decision-making than conventional deterministic forecasts.
What decision can be improved with this modelling approach:
Optimal vessel loading decisions, cost minimisation in the IWT sector, use of alternative transportation modes during low flow events, inventory management
