AQUATOOL: FURTHER ADVANCES
Description
A sophisticated Decision Support System (DSS) for drought management has been developed in a long-term project. Data processing and quantitative modelling are embedded in a series of modules in the Aquatool DSS.
A series of incremental improvements have been implemented in Aquatool modules, including:
- An evaluation of the seasonal predictability of droughts in precipitation and streamflow in the hydrological risk module of Aquatool
- The incorporation of seasonal forecasts in the hydrological risk assessment module of Aquatool (SIMRISK)
- The evaluation of a range of climate change projections for the Jucar River Basin in Spain
(Potential) Categories of users
Water authorities, water resource managers, local authorities
(Potential) applications to decision making in the water sector:
The Aquatool developments are rooted in a long history of decision support system development for the Jucar River Basin area (Spain), organized around the Jucar River Basin Partnership, CHJ. Aquatool can be implemented in any Spanish basin and other European basins where the model chain and Aquatool calibrated modules are available.

Added value of this modelling approach/model/results
With seasonal forecasts incorporated into Aquatool in IMPREX, improvements have been achieved in predicting the onset of the dry season compared to the operational procedure, which is based on statistical modelling using observed precipitation records only.
What decision can be improved with this modelling approach:
Water allocation and water management in arid climate, adaptation to droughts
